According to the Centers for Disease Control:

At this time, there is no evidence that companion animals, including pets, can spread COVID-19 or that they might be a source of infection in the United States.

The CDC has not received any reports of pets or other animals becoming sick with COVID-19.

What that means for SAF-T Shelters is to maintain your COVID-19 response for intaking families with pets, such as:

• wash hands thoroughly and frequently, especially after handling pets, pet food, pet waste, or pet supplies;
• clean up after pets with more diligence;
• take a pet to the veterinarian if there are any concerns about the pet’s health;
• and if someone is suspected or confirmed positive for COVID-19, restrict contact with their pet and activate approved staff members to care for the pet. If keeping the pet with their owner is necessary, the CDC recommends hand washing before and after interacting with the pet.

If your shelter is open and intaking new clients, it is safe to welcome their pets. A client’s pet may be very important for stress reduction and security during this difficult time.
